Cuts and Pins and Shells…

Currently I’m playing a game with myself called “how many days will it take for Sammie to actually sit down and sew?”. So far I am also losing this game. But I have cut stuff out! And pinned it together! And made important planning decisions! So there, self!

Today I spent a good hour brainstorming how exactly and in what order to put together the outer shell and the lining shell and the two sides of the gown. This is why some people tell me to use a pattern, namely my grandmother and mother who get all the phone calls late at night. But in the end it was all figured out and written down and planned ahead, and this allowed me to decide that the first thing to be sewn will be the outer shell, then the lining shell, then to attach these two together at the armholes and neckline. Cross your fingers for me, because I don’t like linings and I definitely don’t like ones that are partly out of fur.

This also obviously means that I have cut out everything (roughly), including making the edition of some side gores to increase the width of the gown. I may have cut the fur out wrong (with the grain going in the wrong direction), but shhh, don’t tell. (This is why there are no pictures of that horrendous experience. Fur is gross, even when fake.)

the first cut is the hardest…

the outer shell all cut out

side gores! all the draping!

the pinned outer shell

with any luck you’ll be hearing from me very soon (and hopefully not because I threw my sewing machine out the window and am crying amidst a pile of fabrics),

sanity and thimbles,

Sammie
